Welsh Valentines Day

Today – January 25th – is Welsh Valentines Day, or more correctly Dydd Santes Dwynwen, which literally means ‘Day of Saint Dwynwen’ in Welsh.

Welsh Valentines Day celebrates Dwynwen,  the Welsh Saint of Love, who lived during the 5th Century and was one of the 24 daughters of King of Wales, Brychan Brycheiniog.

She is said to have been enchantingly beautiful, and was broken hearted when, after she fell in love with a prince called Maelon, her father refused to let her marry him.


It is said that after praying, Dwynwen was visited by an angel and God granted her three wishes, the most important wish being that the hopes and dreams of lovers would be met.

Dwynwen later founded a convent on the west coast of Anglesey, where she was joined by other broken hearted women. After her death in 465AD, a well which was named after her soon became a place of pilgrimage. Dwynwen’s well has stood the test of time and is still there today.

People often exchange romantic gifts on St Dwynwen’s Day – and the most traditional gift to give is a Welsh love spoon, a custom dating back centuries.

Why Date the Welsh?

I have devised a cunning little list of characteristics of the beautiful Welsh! Now, these are not serious, they are just little traits to be taken with a pinch of salt!

1)      They are a right funny lot: You will not run dry in conversation with the Welsh! Wales has birthed a string of hilarious and talented Comedians, some of which being; Rhys Ifans (‘I knew a girl at school called Pandora. Never got to see her box though’ –Notting Hill) and Rob Brydon (‘If I show you how to use the rape alarm and you go to London, England and come back Sunday raped. It’s not on my conscience and I’ll sleep easy and night because I showed you how to use it’ – Gavin and Stacey).

2)      They definitely know how to have a good time: Take Charlotte Church for example…Enough said. I would pay good money to go out on the town with her! Would happily share a few Breezer’s or Hooch’s with Char whilst putting the worlds to rights.

3)      They are a good looking bunch if I do say so! Catherine Zeta-Jones (I would), aside from Cathy’s questionable wavering Welsh accent (which I am sure we can all let her off for!), and her beauty is timeless. Gavin Henson (Definitely would) is a right dish I must say, although personally he has dropped a few places in my ‘I would like to bed’ list for his search for love on a TV programme, COME ON GAV! Tom Jones (I would, just to say I’d done him)…

4)      They aren’t thick either! Alfred Wallace was Welsh; and he has been acknowledged as a co-founder theorist of Darwin’s ‘On the Origin of Species’…SO THERE…Not just a pretty face eh?

So there you go, not only can you find yourself a funny Welsh partner, but you can find yourself the whole package; they can make you laugh until you might wee yourself, they will show you a night on the town that even Lindsey Lohan would be impressed with, they can talk to you about evolution and they can do all of this looking like they have just walked off of a model’s runway.

First Member of the Month

We are featuring Lesley from Gwent as our very first Welsh Woman of the month

Lesley, 43, has recently joined and here’s some of what she has to say…. “My main interests are DIY and in particular house renovating. I’ve renovated 3 properties one of which I project managed myself.

Never again though, as it was way too stressful! In my spare time I enjoy going out with my friends for a drink and pub meal or occasionally catch a good RomCom at the cinema.


My ideal man would be someone who is quite laid back, not afraid to show his feelings, someone honest and with a good and preferably wicked sense of humour. Oh yes…..and not afraid to hold hands in public!!! Lol!!!
